The Nielsen
Shark Beach is a short stretch of harbour sand at the bottom of Nielsen Park in Vaucluse, and The Nielsen sits on it. Coffee goes on at 7am, the kitchen starts at 8, and breakfast runs into a casual lunch through the middle of the day. Parkland climbs behind the building; the water is a few steps the other way. Most people arrive with a towel.
The counter does two jobs. There is a grab-and-go case for anyone who wants a coffee and something to eat on the sand, and a kitchen behind it cooking breakfast and lunch to order. Champagne, hot chips and a lemon wedge belong here as much as a morning coffee does. Hours move with the weather and with how the day is trading, so it is worth ringing ahead if you are coming a distance.
Mornings belong to swimmers, who come up off the sand and order at the counter with wet hair. By the middle of the day it is families, and people who have made the trip out from town. Service ends at 4pm on weekdays and 5pm at weekends, and the last hour, with the light going long across the water, is the one worth staying for.
